I was Acting Deputy Superintendent when

this affair took place. On 18th. January, 1908, C.C. 159 came to

making me and informed me that Jemader Gulab had been kaing overtures to him, and that they had arranged an assignation that night in

Tun Wo Lane.

I instructed the Chinese Constable to keep

the appointment, and took steps to have the place watched. The Chief Detective Inspector told off Sergeant (now Inspector) Murison for this duty, and subsequently (at Sergeant Murison's

suggestion) Sergeant Terrett also.

There is no reason whatever to suppose that

either of these two Officers had any bias against Gulab.

As regards para. 13 of Gulab's petition I

am unfortunately unable to recollect exactly what happened,

-ing to the considerable lapse of time. The Jemadar is correct in saying that I wrote to him telling him to make a statement. Captain Lyons gave me orders to do so. I cannot remember the second letter referred to, nor the circumstances which led to

Captain Lyons making an entry on the 20th. January on the

Defaulter Sheet - 'Admits the charge'. I do not think I was

present when the Acting Captain Superintendent dealt with him.

I had several interviews with the Jemadar,

and on one occasion he produced a«ritten statement denying the charges in toto, alleging that Sergeants Murison and Terrett had a spite against him, and that their evidence and that of the

Chinese Constable was absolutely false. I cannot remember, the

date, but it was very likely the 23rd. January as stated by

him.

and I was anxious to do the best for him that I could. The circumstances were that a Lukong had given me information to

the effect that Gulab, on a stated date and at a stated time would come to Tun Wo Lane for a certain purpose. Two European
